South Valley is a center for transition and vocational training. Students will learn to focus on developing their own goals: independent functional life skills, employment training, and functional academic skills in order to become independent young adults.

Transition skills are the life and employability skills people need to make a successful transition into independent adult life.
In school,

Transition skills help students make a successful transition from one school to the next, or from high school or college to adulthood. According to our students Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals they will to learn to develop functional skills such as social, physical, academics, speech, life skills, etc.

In the workplace,

Transition skills help employees get along with co-workers, cope with increasingly complex and diverse work environments, and adapt to new responsibility.
Students will develop the necessary employment skills such as volunteering at a jobsite
e.g. Wal-Mart in order for them to prepare themselves for a full or part-time paid job.

In life,

Transition skills help people adapt to new environments, recognize and solve problems, make sensible decisions, cope with stress, set and reach important goals, and maintain their personal health. Students will develop the necessary skills to learn how to prepare their own food, do their own laundry, purchase items at a store, plan a get together with friends, etc.

By developing the necessary life skills, graduates are better equipped to face the day-to-day challenges of independent living. They also possess the tools necessary to make good decisions and solve the problems they face. Furthermore, graduates with key employability skills can more readily find and maintain meaningful employment, and usually have a larger number of career options open to them.
